FOR MY FATHER

Eliot Alan Goldings

In December 2005, I made a sound piece that was displayed with a sculpture I constructed, composed of several empty black plastic milk crates that were both open and closed.

I requested that family members email me a story or recollection of my father's character. I then used a voice synthesizer for each so they form a universalized yet personal portrait. It was an attempt to understand who he was after a lifetime of relying on photographic images and other family members' discussions. I was still an infant when he died in 1988, so collaging their words has helped me piece together the man who will always be part of me.
